MVHR Commissioning & Airflow Balancing in London

A system that has never been properly commissioned — or one that has drifted over the years — can be noisy, unbalanced or under-ventilating even when it looks like it works.

Last reviewed: by the MVHR Expert engineering team

We measure airflow with a calibrated flow hood, adjust the system to the design rates and produce a commissioning record you can hand to building control, a warranty provider or a buyer's solicitor.

Commissioning & balancing includes

  • Review of design airflow rates and duct layout
  • Measurement of supply and extract flow at every valve
  • Adjustment of fan speeds and valve settings
  • Boost, trickle and bypass operation test
  • Sound check and resistance issues flagged
  • Commissioning record for building control / Part F

How it works

  1. Review. We check the design airflow schedule or create one from room types.
  2. Measure. Flow hood readings at every valve, before any adjustment.
  3. Balance. Valves and fan speeds adjusted to hit design rates.
  4. Record. Final readings documented for sign-off.

What does 'balanced' mean for MVHR?

A balanced system extracts and supplies roughly the same total volume of air, with the right amount going to and from each room. If supply exceeds extract (or vice versa), the home can be pressurised or depressurised, noise increases and heat recovery efficiency falls.

Commissioning after a repair or unit replacement

After a repair or unit replacement we re-measure and rebalance airflow and give you a record of the readings. For blocks we can provide per-unit records suitable for managing agents, warranty providers and handover packs.

MVHR Commissioning & Balancing: common questions

Why does an MVHR system need commissioning?

Without measured and balanced airflow, there's no way to know the system provides the ventilation the home was designed for. Commissioning is also required and must be recorded for new installations under Approved Document F in England.

Can an existing MVHR system be rebalanced?

Yes. We measure current airflow, adjust the valves and fans and give you before-and-after readings.
